nothing better than art club kids paintings xx

printmaking with kids is wonderful.
they get really involved in the process & the results always feel really special

i haven't been keeping up the blog - but the Art Club Kids have been busy!

lots of collages, printmaking, construction & painting...

i bought lots of colorful tapes in new york last year and they've been wonderful.

remember these paper fasteners? they're great fun for construction projects. the kids love the process, cutting papere, punching holes and fastening the pieces together.

Wooden Construction

We really loved this project - the children were given pieces of balsa wood for bases, lots of different kinds of wooden materials and wood glue... the sculptures looked wonderful! The following week the children were excited to paint them. Definitely a project to repeat again and again.

rolled up paintings waiting to be taken home

we use ALOT of glue!

home made play dough

nothing like fresh off the stove chemical-free playdough

see our favorite recipe (from the Children's Museum of Art in NYC) below:

4 cups water
4 cups flour
2 cups salt
8 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
food coloring

combine all dry ingredients in a pot and stir together.
add the water and stir till lumps are gone.

add the vegetable oil and stir.
once smooth add coloring.

plave over low heat and stir continuously, bringing up the cooked dough from the bottom of the pot.
stir for 15/20 mins - the dough is ready when it is one lump and not sticky to touch.

Summer Art Drop In

We had 14 children pop in throughout the day today for some sunny arty fun.
We made collages - played with homemade play dough and "spray painted" posters.
Little ones as young as 18 months and big kids as old at 8 all enjoyed the same activities!

graphite sticks

Graphite sticks are great for kids, the sticks are thick and easy to hold and the marks are bolder and darker than regular pencils. We asked the kids to draw very slowly and then really fast to compare.

Blast off!

we made rockets this week!

This is our last week of the current term and The Art Club kids are making books. We folded together sugar paper and hole-punched on the fold. The kids bound the books with yarn. Then the filled each page with drawings, rubber stamps, stickers and photos brought from home. We traced our hands and made them our own. A lovely way to end a wonderful term.

p.s. A big thank you to our friend and crafting expert Leigh for the rubber stamps!

mixed media drawings

Last week we tried out soft pastels for the first time. We also used oil pastels, watercolours, and markers; mixing them together and comparing how they work. This is some of the prettiest work the kids have done and the lovely watercolour paper makes a big difference.
